The installation was OK but the batteries in the main unit only last a week or so (we’re using re-chargables, but still, a week!) One of the collars is now flashing red which makes me think that battery is also dying and that’s been about 10 days since we installed the door.

  2. Sleepysandi

I just ordered my third door in 8 years. They are very helpful for a while, but I have two 65lb labs that run through the door to save me from people outside our yard. Have never used the collar sensors. Just need a long lasting door that works for Labs. I am committed to this one since there is a pre-cut hole in the door.

  3. Bullymom

Wish the battery worked longer… but biggest issue is the hinge system… and our problem is NOT that it’s too tight because we don’t use the locking system all the time!! But the hinge has broken from just normal wear and tear which has now cause the door to remain open which is now a concern we have because it leaves it open for the cat to get out. Which is a HUGE problem for us.

Honestly this door would be a 5 star if not for this issue… but now that we can’t keep our cat in safely (when the name of the product is pet safe) it needs to keep all pets in the home safe! We purposely bought this one because it did click shut when closed… now it doesn’t…!!!

  4. Carol03

We have had this door less than a year and the flimsy plastic brackets have broken off. As far as I can tell there is no replacement for the large door only one for a small door. There are many reviews on this issue and I would think the company would fix the problem or at least sell replacement part. Very disappointed.

  5. Jen62

I’ve purchased at least four of these doors in the past and each one had to be replaced because the hinges would break. Unfortunately, the hinges are not available for purchase.
My latest door just broke at the hinge last night. I wish this piece was made better then perhaps it might last longer than less than a year. I honestly could have had a custom dog door made for the amount of money I’ve spent on these.

  6. Michelle D

I never do reviews but I saw how low the rating was for this door and had to give my opinion. I have to tell you this thing is a lifesaver. We have had ours for 6 years and our 2 dogs go out multiple times a day. It works perfectly. The only thing that is getting old is the door hinge but I would expect that from weather and daily use. I am definitely going to buy the same one when ours needs to be replaced.

  7. Robin1234

Now that the warmer weather is here, I wanted to be able to let our dog come and go as she pleases, to do her business and enjoy the warmer weather in our fenced in back yard. So, this past week, I installed the Electronic SmartDoor™- Large, and boy was it an easy install. I am not a handy person and hate any home improvements that require more than a screwdriver or hammer. But, within a half hour I had the
Electronic SmartDoor™- Large installed and ready for my dog to try out.

What is so neat about the Electronic SmartDoor™- Large is that it uses radio frequency technology to unlock the SmartDoor, when paired with the Smartkey worn on your pet’s collar. When it doesn’t sense the key any more, it locks the flap automatically behind hit. One hesistation I had with installing a dog door was that the flap would always be accessible, and that we may get unwanted visitors accessing the door flap. So, when I found that this
Electronic SmartDoor™- Large uses special technology to open and shut the door glap, that is what sold me.

And, now that I have been using the Electronic SmartDoor™- Large with my dog for the past week, I can say that this was a great investment and one my dog and I love. She can come and go as she pleases, and I have peace of mind that only she will be entering and leaving through the SmartDoor. If you have been looking for a
Electronic SmartDoor™, I highly recommend this one, with the built in radio-frequency technology. Hands down, it the best investment for pet owners looking to add a dog door to their homes.

I’ve had this door for a year now, and after a year of modifying, and remodifying, I give. Simply not a great door for strong dogs. Our doberman broke the door out initially, it was put back in place. The 2nd time he broke it out some of the plastic fasteners broke off. My SO ended up modifying the door with an aluminum strip and all new hardware. It’s been broken off several times even with the new modifications. The key backs fall off and we didn’t end up using them anyways to begin with. The frame is solid, we got the wall kit which is flimsy and had to seal ourselves but nonetheless it’s installed. I’d love to order another model that will fit the already permanent opening. As of current, our heat’s turned off until we figure out what to do to fix the door. It’s not strong enough for large dogs, they bust it right out!

  9. Phatdon

Great product, fairly simple to install. Only issue I have is it devours D batteries. Wiuld be outstanding if there were a plug-in option. Other than that, reliable product and worth the price.

  10. Isaac09

After reading all of the reviews, the VERY common problem is the hinge. This is going to be my 3rd or 4th door and second to purchase (the sizable hole is hard to find a replacement for), most EVERYONE has had the exact same broken and weak point of the hinge. Some of these comments are from long enough ago, you would think that the company would look at the common problems and try and fix the issue. But they seemingly have yet to make an attempt to fix the common and perpetual problem of the hinge!!! GUYS COME ON!!!!!!!! Not adding a photo, there are plenty of them on here already.

  11. imnotanelf

This is a great pet door! It’s really great quality and the size is nice and big. It was super quick to install with clear and precise instructions. I love the locking function, so I know only my pet can get in with their “key”. Overall it’s just the best pet door I’ve ever used.

  12. Brooke C

I purchased this dog door when I first moved to help my dog get out and cat stay in. the door does have some problems (key gets disconnected sometimes and if my cat gets to it quick enough he can make it out and lock the door wrong. it also has a not so strong flap connector and my shepherd has knocked it out I think 3 times so far.) besides the acasenal mess up with the door it is by far my favorite home perches. the company is beyond amazing and their customer service is wonderful! every time I call they are so friendly in helping me with my situation. I will continue to tell my friends and family to get dog doors from pet safe. if they need anyone to test out stronger door flap supports me and my shepherd will gladly put it to the test!

  13. Uglysquid

We had some trouble with our first one, but it was replaced under warranty and this one has lasted about 9 years ago far, with three dogs. It functions well, our oldest and biggest needs to be able to put at night without letting coyotes in, so it works well for that. We leave it unlocked during the day.

It can be loud as it swings back and forth, which is either a flaw or a feature. It needs more magnets, at least here, as 20 mph winds are enough to blow it open and hold it open (interfering with the auto lock feature), and we get those quite often.

In auto lock it can lock while swinging, which results in a jam that can only be fixed manually, defeating the purpose.

The collar batteries are standard button cells, but they embed them in plastic to make them harder to replace, wanting you to buy theirs for a significant markup.

Definitely room to improve but still pretty good.

  14. Jonny

I was really excited about this product because it would fit my old english sheep dog but would not allow large critters to enter AND my cat could stay in while my dog could go out. Unfortunately, the plastic hinges broke within months of owning it. I have uninstalled it to see how I might fix it but it appears the hinge cannot be fixed or replaced.

  15. DMA0410

I bought this product a year ago for my 13 yr old Boston terrier. The key is big but he adjusted. I had to rush home from work because the door failed and locked him outside so he managed to get out of the yard and walk around to the front door and laid on the front porch because he wanted to go in the house. Thankfully I saw him on my ring cam and rushed home. The door will no longer go into any of the settings and stay It locks on its own or it will stay open. It is no longer reliable. I will have to replace it unfortunately it will have to be with this same door because of the hole in the door.

  16. Two 100 lb huskies

Love the door at first it worked really really well at keeping out the cold air but overtime my two buffalo dogs broke the plastic hinge that holds the door to the top. Now the thing is absolutely worthless. I’ve tried multiple means by which to fix it, and have searched endlessly for replacement parts, but have no way to do such as I have not found anything available. I would love to that Pata make a stronger hinge may be something not out of 16th inch plastic perhaps extruded, aluminum or something I don’t know, but definitely the Achilles heel of this otherwise awesome door

  17. leonna91

I absolutely love this dog door and how well and easy it is for my dog to use. I love its automatic and only opens if the collar is close to it so we can’t get any other animals in the house. I love how big it is as well makes it so easy for my dog to go out through it. I highly recommend trying this out you will not be disappointed.

  18. StacyP

This smart door is amazing. It works great. The smart key attaches too your dogs collar and you can set it for your dog to unlock it when he is 2 feet away. Now it does take some teaching to get them through the door because my dog looked like I’m not going through that thing. We have to buy 2 more smartkeys because we have 2 more dogs. But you can buy more replacement parts which is great. It will lock back after 2 minutes of no activity. But I lobe this electronic smart door. It very easy to install and takes little time to do so. And the smartkey is small so noone knows its on his collar unless you pet him. And the smartkey runs on the big watch batteries. Its worth the investment. I’m glad now I don’t have to let them out everytime now. They can go when they want. Plus the main dog waits on his buddies to go out with him which is a plus too. But we taught our dog with a treat and he started using it within 2 days. I would recommend to try this smart door for your furbabies.

  19. Jmayer81

My dog is a chunky 45lb mutt and kind of tall. This door states it is for dogs up to 100lbs. When I received it I took the frame out of the box and was instantly concerned that the size wasn’t going to work. Unless your dog is short and squat with very high muscle weight, this would never work. It’s not going to work for an average 100lb dog.
Prior to cutting into the door, I mocked it up to get my dog to go through it and while he fit, technically, it was not comfortable for him. He was very leery and hesitant. We tried this many times to ensure it would work for us before cutting the door and eventually decided it wasn’t going to work for us.

That said, I do think is a good quality product. The materials are well made and the collar function works very smoothly. Which was a big part of the reason I chose this product. Traditional dog doors scare me because you never know what might sneak in overnight, but the collar sensor removes all of those concerns. Had this worked out size-wise, I know I would have been very happy with it.

  20. Cher W

Overall I like the door and the concept, dogs are still adjusting to the heavy weight plastic versus the vinyl type doors they had in the past. The loud “click” noise really gets my girl scared so mostly using it as unlocked during day and locked during night instead of the fobs right now. Hoping we get her accustomed to the sound to use it as intended – need to keep local wildlife out!

  21. Arosenbrock

I bought the large door in July. My two medium sized dogs use it frequently but it is now December and the cheap plastic on the door is broken and it no longer functions as it is designed.

We have been leaving it unlocked for the last few months because the keys have fallen off their collars and are lost in the yard somewhere. The batteries still died quickly despite not being used to open and close the door. I plan to call customer service about a replacement but I’m not sure I want to waste my time on another door like this unless they have updated the design.

  22. Nickypoo1962

I have always wanted a doggie door for my furry son. The need increased as my disability worsened. Little did I know that with an added electronic collar, any safety concerns, were immediately gone. My boyfriend installed it for me, while I watched. The entire process took a little over an hour. Not because it was difficult, but he removed the door to mark and measure. Cutting was quick. I was concerned about insulation around the door, so although not required, we added some weather stripping, just in case. Once it was all installed, calibrating the battery sensitivity took time, but nothing major, just another step in the whole process. The hardest part for us, has been training our dog to actually use it. He’s still scratching to come in, but I’m confident that he’ll have it mastered shortly. After watching my boyfriend install it, I think I could have done it myself. Hardest part was removing the door from its hinges. Door has been hanging for over 20years. I’m so happy to finally have our doggie door. With a little more training, I know our dog will use his door and never have to worry when I’m waking up, or if I’m able to walk down the stairs, when he’s ready to go. A real life safer for me, but more importantly, my furry baby boy, Jayvon!!!

  23. Jami lee

This has been such a helpful addition to our home. It was easy to install with easy to understand directions. It works great to let pur pets in and out of the house without the worry of unwanted critters wandering in.

I absolutely love the idea of this door, HOWEVER, the first door I received didn’t work the electronics were bad. PetSafe was awesome and replace the door immediately no problem. The second door worked but it drained batteries so quickly that I quit using the collar receivers and just left it unlocked which kind of defeated the purpose. At about 18 months the little plastic tabs broke off of the door and I had to replace it. the new door drain the batteries so quickly that I quit using the collar receivers again, and now here I am again about 18 months in, and I am losing the hinge in a different spot. The hinge is connected to the motor that raises and lowers it by 3 oh, I guess you could call them pins. We have a new puppy but just came in this last week and the dogs have been flying through that door pretty quickly and they broke one of the pins that holds the door on. I have compensated for the weak side of the door by putting both magnets on the damaged side to pull it into place and keep it from dragging, but this isn’t going to last very long and it’s very loud.
As I see it this door has two major design flaws. The battery drainage issue, and the weak link of the hinge.
As I said I absolutely love the idea of this door. If you could fix these two issues I would be ecstatic.

  25. Teddy Bear

Contrary to some reviews, this programmed perfectly in accordance with instructions. The door is in an outbuilding shop so power warning lights are not readily observed. When unlocking and lock time became longer a battery check showed why, changed batteries fixed it. That use time was over about four months of medium to heavy use by pet. New batteries required original setup procedure, again as per directions. This should be added to directions. Feature I learned and never saw in directions, door moved to locked position before swing stopped and it was centered, allowing any critter to go through in one direction. I watched it go down to locked position and then almost immediately lift and recenter itself and lock! Has been great product.

  26. Wanderer81321

This is an excellent product. Beware though. You want to use this door in the automatic setting. It has an “unlocked” setting that is convenient to use once in awhile. Do not use this setting for extended periods of time if you have dogs that, like me, love to bolt out the door when company shows up you may want to consider leaving the door in the automatic setting. In my case my 4 dogs love to “come a runnin” when someone comes down the driveway and when the door is in the unlocked position there is nothing to slow them down the door hinges are just not designed to take the “hit” and they end up breaking in the corners which in turn cause the automatic function not to work since the door can then no longer rise and lower correctly. At least in the automatic position the dogs have to stop and wait for the door to “pop” open before they go running outside thus slowing them down and minimizing the impact on the door hinges. We have had to replace the door once due to this hard lesson. Other than that excellent product. Oh and always keep a spare set of D batteries.

  27. Turk44

I recently bought this and installed on our bsck door. I have to say that I’m having some regrets. The door was easy to install and is a good size for my 2 dogs, but there are several things I am not pleased with. #1 — the key is HUGE and super awkward. I expected it to be similar to an underground fence collar but it isn’t. Even on our large dog it hangs awkwardly on her collar and she gets it hung on stuff. It’s ridiculous on our Boston Terrier. I can’t even leave it on his collar which defeats the purpose. #2 — the flap is poorly designed. It really has to be pushed hard to open and it has a tendency to swing back and catch them if they are just trying to look out. It’s also really hard to train the dogs to use compared to other doors. The key doesn’t unlock quick enough and it’s so loud that it scares them. It burns through batteries way too fast. I wish I could buy a rubber flap to switch out but unfortunately I’m stuck because nothing like this is offered. So I paid extra for a sensor lock that is useless because of the huge, awkward keys and now I’m stuck with the weird locking flap that my dogs don’t realize is open unless I prop it open. Huge waste of money that I’m stuck with.

  28. Ed really Ed

In theory, it’s a great door.

    Problems I’ve had:
    1. Dog is afraid of the noise the door makes as he approaches. Solved by disabling the electronic locking (it can be switched off).
    2. Battery did not last long. Discovered when we went to lock it while on vacation. Batteries were dead, and it had been left “off”. Ended up blocking access to ensure no animals entered while we were away.
    3. Door let’s in cold air during winter.
    4. After 1.5 years, the hinge completely broken, the plastic rod pieces snapped off one by one over time.
    5. It let a bat in because the broken hinge clips don’t hold it straight.
    6. I now own a useless doggie door and the back door to my house is useless unless I replace doggie door with another one (not good) or replace the door.

I strongly suggest you go with a different model at least.
